Presenter:  Kathy K Wylie

Appliqué quilts are among the most beautiful, jaw-dropping, crowd-pleasing and award-winning of all quilts. This lecture is all about appliqué.

Do you marvel over beautiful appliquéd quilts and wonder how they were accomplished? You might be surprised at the number of techniques and methods that can be used to create these masterpieces. This lecture will give you some insight into the various types of appliqué along with stunning photographs and real-life examples.

Kathy is a multiple international-award winning quilter specializing in appliqué, quilt design, domestic machine quilting and English Paper Piecing techniques. She started sewing and embroidering as a young girl, laying the foundation for the life-altering discovery of quilting two decades later. Over the past twenty-five years, quilting has grown from a hobby into a full-time creative career.
Kathy lectures and teaches all over Canada at guilds, shops, and quilt shows. Kathy has been a guest-artist in residence at The Elly Sienkiewicz Appliqué Academy, a quilting cruise instructor with Quilt Seminars at Sea, a guest on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims, and a frequent faculty member at Quilt Canada. Kathy is also a Canadian Quilters’ Association Certified Quilt Judge.

Program: “Airport Security Stole My Scissors” and trunk show

“1996 was a turning point in my life when I saw my first quilt and could not believe you could manipulate fabric to make such intricate designs. It was love at first sight and I was hooked. The journey I continue to this day.  I enjoy the challenge of original designs. I like to incorporate traditional design elements and bright colours.  My favourite part of guilting is hand applique and hand quilting.  I compare hand quilting with meditation.”

Program: “Piecing Together Canada’s History Through Quilts

Pauline Grondin has been telling stories and making music all of her life.
In 1973 when she became a Cubmaster for Scouts Canada, Pauline was able to incorporate her talents and love of stories and music into her cub-packs.
Her cubs encouraged her to tell the Jungle Stories of Rudyard Kipling over and over again. Scout leaders participated in her workshops as part of their training and she was soon in demand with Scouting and Guiding groups all over Southern Ontario.

In 1985 a schoolteacher discovered Pauline’s talents and the rest, as they say, is history.

Following her French Canadian and Irish roots, Pauline’s storytelling has delighted audiences of all ages in Canada, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. In the oral tradition of storytelling she presents a potpourri of fairy tales, myths, legends, folk tales, self penned and first person stories, often accompanied by a number of musical instruments and songs.

Stories, Traditions and Superstitions honour the quilt designs from long ago.

No thread running through Canada’s history is stronger or more consistent than in their use as links between women and their female descendants. Many women felt that the female family, past, present and in the future was important and that these generations were united by the quilts that were the works of their hands and their hearts.Pauline is the Social Historian for the South Western Ontario Barn Quilt Trail.

BIO
I’d a lifelong fibre FIEND and I come by it naturally!
Growing up in a household of “hopeless creatives” I was introduced to pretty much every fibre artistry there is from a very early age.
Knitting, crochet, cross stitch, macrame…you name it…I got tied up in it. Literally! Of course, that was before it was “cool” for boys!
Graduating with a degree in Fashion Technique and Design led me to explore even more creative avenues with cross-over from multiple creative fields, specializing in costume and activewear design. I have worked in pretty much every medium but found my passion in quilting over 8 years ago.
From my first valiant yet not so pretty attempts at stitching the perfect 1/4″ seam to taking my artistry to the next step by offering custom longer quilting to clients, designing my own quilt patterns, to speaking engagements and sharing my passion through teaching… I never stop growing and never stop playing.
I believe in pushing ourselves creatively. Never stop playing, never stop learning. Quilting isn’t about rules, it’s about passion, having fun and sharing a piece of yourself in everything you do.
When what you do is play time…is it really work? Not in my world.
May your fabric stashes make you smile and all your 1/4″ seams be even…ISH!
