Mandate
Grimsby Quilters’ Guild mandate is to give back to the community each year. In the past we provided Comfort Quilts and placemats to local community care organizations.
A new initiative of donating packaged food and other requested soft goods to local organizations was added post Covid. Our members were very generous. A request for sewing supplies from Good Shepherd in Hamilton brought an overwhelming abundance of crafty materials from our stash.
Ongoing is the Flannel Scent Hearts program. Scent Hearts are given to parents whose newborn infants have been admitted to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The fabric heart is worn against the parent’s skin so that the fabric might absorb the scent of the parent. The heart is placed with the baby so the parent is always with their child.
Outreach News
October is Gillians Place month. Please consider bringing some of the requested items to the October meeting. We will focus on pillowcases in another month.
Body wash and soap (not travel size) Bear Paws
Shampoo and conditioner Rice Krispie squares (packaged)
Deodorant granola bars
Toothbrushes and toothpaste crackers
Hand soap cookies
Ankle socks pasta and sauce
Slippers canned soup
November is holiday placemat month. We will be donating these to the GBF. Information will be available at October’s meeting.
Two ongoing activities are Scent Hearts and Comfort Quilts (Lap Quilts).
Scent Hearts are given to parents with a child in the Neonatal Unit at area hospitals. They are easily made in a heart shape with flannel.
Comfort Quilts have been a mainstay of the GQG since inception. Members are given the option of:
- using donated fabrics and batting to make a completed quilt;
- taking home a kit containing a quilt top, batting, backing and binding to put together;
- take home a kit containing precut squares organized in pleasing arrangement to sew into a quilt top;
There are several packages of quilt squares available for stitching into a top and many tops waiting to be finished. Some of these and Scent Heart packages will be available at the Community Outreach table at each Guild meeting.
All suggestions (also comments or kind criticism’s) for how we can reach out and give back to the community are welcome. Please speak to the Coordinator or if you are feeling shy, a suggestion box is available on the snack table (for anonymity).
Thank you to everyone that contributes time and effort to our Community Outreach Program.
Good Shepherd

Has an initiative that is close to the hearts of the Good Shepherd. Their “Learn Sew” program provides individuals in their shelters with meaningful skills and opportunities for growth. They are currently seeking support in the form of sewing supplies and would be grateful if our members would consider donating sewing supplies; fabric; patterns, magazines, thread and sewing machines. Items can be new or gently used and clean.
